Alone - Season 3
Like ‘Survivor’ without the showbiz – ‘Alone’ recruits amateur survivalists and outdoorsy types, gives them a few cameras and leaves them in the wilderness of Patagonia to document their journey. Their main motivation to stay - $500,000 USD for the last person standing.
After watching too many bushcraft and camping adventure videos on YouTube, some friends recommended this show to me for how raw the stories are. Although the production value isn’t of the same polish/budget of Survivor or Man vs Wild, it is mostly compelling watching as the contestants do their best to stay sheltered, fed and remain focused in the Argentinian mountain ranges.
A few notable bushcraft creations include loads of whittled wooden spoons, a double walled hut made from bamboo and a sauna. The fascinating aspect for me was watching some contestant’s mental resilience to endure while ignoring the strain on their bodies. We see the contestant Dave N, removed by producers after 73 days due to medical advice that his wilful starvation has left him on the brink of death. This is despite his ample reserves of dried fish sitting in his shelter. This contrasts the extremely short stint for another who talks a big game initially yet taps out after only two days.
If you would like to get into the 12 episodes available on Kanopy, I’d certainly recommend watching them from a warm living room with plenty of snacks on hand for a deluxe viewing experience.
