Babylon (DVD)

Babylon

Babylon, the 2022 drama featuring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt, serves as both a homage to the "making of the movies" in 1920s Hollywood and a depiction of the depravity within the movie industry. The film explores the glamorous side of Hollywood during the emergence of talking movies, showcasing the scene-making process and the vibrant jazz era. It also includes footage paying tribute to the classic jazz-age movie "Singing in the Rain."

However, this glamour comes at a cost, as the narrative unfolds through several long scenes of depravity and decadence, featuring wild parties involving individuals from the movie industry, notably the vivacious Nellie Le Roy portrayed by Margot Robbie. The decadent lifestyle eventually leads to the tragic deaths of characters played by Brad Pitt and Robbie.

The sole surviving character, Diego Calvo, is seen at the film's conclusion, watching, and crying in awe at scenes from "Singing in the Rain" in a 1952 movie theatre, surrounded by an avid audience. Diego's experience reflects the background degradation that accompanied the creation of this musical art form.
Not for the faint-hearted, "Babylon" is a wild adventure that depicts the moral corruption of 1920s Hollywood while also capturing the classic movie memories produced by individuals in the movie business.
