The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
From the very start this book captured my attention, being written from the perspective of Death itself. It was a very odd but intriguing choice. The Book Thief is based in Nazi Germany and follows a little girl who is growing up on the streets of Germany in a new home with new adoptive parents. The book follows her as she learns how to read and write, learns how to go to school under the new Nazi regime, and learns how important it is to keep secrets to protect her friends but, most of all, her new family. I really enjoyed reading this novel and following Liesel as she navigates this new life. I couldn’t help but fear for her in many parts of the novel and feel protective of her as she finds conflict with the Nazi regime.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical novels and people who like novels with an unexpected twist at the end.
