The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read (and Your Children Will Be Glad That You Did)

The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read (and Your Children Will Be Glad That You Did) by Philippa Perry

Kudos to the publishers who decided on the bright-coloured cover, which made me read the clickbait-ish title, and ultimately pick up Philippa Perry's "The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read."

Having only read a handful of parenting books - which can feel a little ‘same-same’ after a while - this one really grabbed me with its focus on understanding your own upbringing and how it affects your parenting style.

Perry's book delves deeper into the psychological roots, which I found thought-provoking as it was a bit like taking a behind-the-scenes look at why we parent the way we do.

Perry encourages parents to reflect on their childhood experiences and recognise patterns that might be influencing their child’s behaviour. She also emphasises the importance of treating children as fully aware individuals and acknowledging their feelings. Not easy tasks, of course, when you’re sleep-deprived and juggling the rest of life’s challenges.

As with any self-help book, always take it with a grain of salt and adapt useful advice to your own situation. I think Perry's grounded, real-life scenarios, and her willingness to share her own parenting mishaps, make the advice feel reassuring and maybe even achievable.

Like any parent, I want to build a strong, healthy relationship with my child, and this book has aided me in keeping focus on that goal.
