Cat on the Run is another fun graphic novel from one of Australia’s favourite children’s author Aaron Blabey. The star of the series is Princess Beautiful, a celebrity kitty with over 2.2 billion followers. Many of her videos have gone viral in the classic cute-kitten-video fashion; Boogie Woogie Kitty, Bread Head, Screen Door Capers, and more. But one day Princess Beautiful and her video production managers make a massive mistake while producing one of her internet videos – and it is cast around the world. Viewers paying close attention to the video notice that Princess Beautiful has activated nuclear weapons and comments quickly turn from “Genius” and “OMG SO cute” to “the cat is evil” and “#CATFACEDWORLDENDER”.

What follows is a rapid trial-by-social-media and Blabey cleverly illustrates the fickle nature of the social media landscape. Princess Beautiful has no choice but to go on the run to try to avoid capture and prove her innocence. Children will love the fast-paced action sequences and adults with appreciate Blabey’s ironic depiction of the destructive power of social media. 

A warning though: Book one ends on a cliff hanger and Episode 2 is coming soon.

This new series was recommended to me by one of our young patrons, who is now eagerly awaiting the production of Book 2.
