Silver Leaves by Gladys Milroy

A children’s chapter book that reminds us to care for Country, trees and work together to protect the environment. Two night birds, an Owl and Night Parrot, find their cosy tree invaded by a flock of day birds because their trees have been cut down. Where else can they go if their roost is gone? As the tree is not big enough for all, they devise a plan to collect seeds to grow more trees, however, it’s not easy to find seeds anymore, and seeds need water and trees take time to grow. Night Parrot’s chance meeting with the last Goanna and protector of the last red berry bush, shares his problem and the Goanna helps by shedding silver tears for the tree to grow. This story brings a sense of hope that things can be restored when we work together. (Indigenous collection)
