Citizen Hearst
This documentary explores life of William Randolph Hearst, first media magnate, and is in a way basis for understanding modern media. His colourful approach to reporting news helped him build largest American newspaper agency and made him politically and socially influential.
The story follows young Hearst stepping out into the world, and building a new approach to journalism, based on sensationalism and yellow journalism. He did not want to report the news, he wanted to create them. He successfully fabricated atrocities in Spanish-American War in 1898 and precipitated American military action by media involvement and continued to change rules of journalism. Hearst openly used propaganda to influence political and social action and to enable his own political career and change in society. His life was an inspiration for Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane.
Featured on Kanopy in two parts, it’s a fantastic lesson on history of modern media.
