Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
There have been so many positive reviews on this new release from popular author Barbara Kingsolver I was keen to listen to this on Libby.
This is a big read and a big story of Demon Copperhead, born to a troubled mother the day after his father dies. Loosely based on David Copperfield by Charles Dickens this is a tale of resilience through life’s hardships.
Demon is a boy with the odds stacked against him but continues to hope for family and love. He forges strong relationships with those who care for him, and these relationships help him navigate through the travails of life in the Appalachian area of Eastern USA.
The opioid crisis which impacted many areas of rural America is a major theme in this tale. It is a heartbreaking story but written with warmth and love for the main characters. Demon’s humour and capacity for love keeps you wishing and hoping for him throughout this coming-of-age tale. Don’t let the topic put you off this beautifully written book. I loved it and have recommended it to friends and family.
