The Giver by Craig Russell
Twelve year old Jonas, lives in a seemingly ideal, if colourless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.
Like many people, I read The Giver when I was in school, but I had lost most of the detail over the years. Picking up the new Graphic Novel was a whim that paid off, refreshing lost memories, and giving new insights with an older brain. Seeing it in the graphic novel format added a different perspective again and a depth that is enhanced by seeing characters expressions and the colours (or colourlessness) of the world.
Exploring a world without emotion, love or choice but also without war, poverty or suffering presents an interesting dilemma to the reader. Do we value one more than the other? What’s more important? Lowrey’s opinion might be clear in the text, but the reader is free to make that choice for themselves. Anyone who wants to revisit a classic story in a new format could pick up this graphic novel and not be disappointed.
