A Heart That Works by Rob Delaney

A Heart That Works by Rob Delaney

Rob Delaney, an American comedian famous for acting in the hilarious British comedy - Catastrophe, has taken a completely different route in his artistic career in the form of a biographical account of his young son’s tragic death from cancer.

Delaney, known for his acerbic wit and repartee with Sharon Horgan in Catastrophe manages to weave humorous snapshots of his family’s struggles and experience into the chapters of A Heart That Works in a sensitive but personal way.

Reading Delaney’s book had me feeling a variety of emotions as I devoured it in two days. At times I snorted with laughter and at other times I teared up reading about his toddler son’s cancer fight. This book is a beautiful and moving tribute to his child and the rest of his children and his wife, Leah.

Delaney’s writing is not only beautifully apt but also challenges the reader to contemplate some sobering and confronting life concepts. One of his own personal reflections resonates I think to most people who would read this book. “There’s a grim comfort on hearing about others pain.”

Highly recommend reading this beautiful and moving memoir, but a word of caution, you may need some tissues handy.
