The birdlife in our suburban backyards brings such joy, birdsong and nature close up. So, I was thinking what I can do to encourage more of this when I found this book: How to Attract Birds to your Garden. It provided much inspiration to start building my own nest box, improve the habitat in my garden and a greater awareness of the needs of our feathered friends. The bird photography is really stunning in this book and combines beautifully with the digitally drawn illustrations. It covers birdfeeders and types of seed, including how to make your own seed feed; bird profiles and behaviour; providing habitat and plants for birds to feed on; bird baths and positioning, and other water features; and how to keep birds safe from predators.
The nesting box creates the conditions that a bird seeks in nature. I found this section particularly useful for inspiration on how to make my own, presenting many sustainable ideas for upcycling, recycling, or building from scratch. It includes a range of boxes and pouches for different types of birds and the most important feature to know, location, the best position for the bird nest.
There are so many things to consider when attracting birdlife. Due to the variety of birds and the types of conditions and needs unique to each, one-size does not fit all. This book covers a lot of territory and for this reason gives the reader a full understanding of what is required. Not all birds native to Australia are included, however, a lot of common birds found in Australian gardens are and for this reason the book will give a good understanding to the beginner for appreciating birds.
