The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games was a pop culture phenomenon when it first released in 2008. If you’re not familiar with the story, it follows the tribulations of Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl fighting for survival in the not-so-distant future. She lives in the world of Panem, separated in to twelve districts, where every year a young boy and a girl from each district are placed in to ‘The Hunger Games’ – a gladiator-style/arena battle royale/fight to the death situation. Needless to say, once the action starts it doesn’t let up.
The Hunger Games was originally written as a trilogy, with the books ‘Catching Fire’ and ‘Mockingjay’ coming after this title. In 2020, a prequel to the trilogy was released, ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’. With the movie of this title coming to cinemas very soon interest in the original trilogy has been re-ignited and it’s the perfect time to jump back in (or read for the first time)
The Hunger Games is the gold standard in Young Adult reads – great world building, characters you care about, shocking plot twists and moments. I remember reading this originally in 2008 and thinking it was great. Turns out in 2023 I still think the same thing.
