Living Lightly: The Busy Person’s Guide to Mindful Consumption by Nicola Turner

Are you interested in reducing your impact on the environment? Or just tired of the endless shopping and want to consume less? Perhaps you just want to start making a few small changes towards living a simpler life. If so, Living lightly is a great book to help you get started.

Turner is not wrong when she says, “our society is wired to be on a constant quest for more” and she is an expert on shopper behaviour, professionally having worked in the retail field employing the tactics to make you buy more. However, she turned her back on all this when her partner started experiencing allergies and a change of lifestyle required careful consideration of what her family used on themselves. Things snowballed from there, not only did she improve her family’s health and lifestyle but reduced her footprint on the environment in monumental ways (one bag of rubbish per year!!) and saved money and time. She presents an easy to use guide with lots of simple, easy to understand graphics providing a snapshot into her life with time hacks and money saving alternatives.  It covers all aspects of a modern lifestyle; food, personal hygiene, housework and cleaning products, laundry, storage, travel packing and much more.

There is no shortage of books on this theme, however, Living lightly is one of the better ones around. I really loved this book; Turner has some great ideas and I experienced plenty of “I could do that” moments. As much as I would like to adopt all the practices to do my bit for the environment, it has always seemed overwhelming to me, however, Turner has made this complex task seem doable and presents lots of small, simple changes you can make to get started. It inspired me to be more conscious in my choices instead of just opting for convenience and take more proactive steps towards consuming less. Now I just need to remember my keep cup for those takeaway coffees.
