Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff

The works of H.P. Lovecraft and his Cthulhu Mythos is more known now than when he was alive and writing in pulp magazines. His viscous, tentacular monsters have had a recent resurgence more mainstream than a cult following. Matt Ruff’s book is amazingly read by Kevin Kenerly.

Lovecraft Country follows Atticus, an African American Korean war veteran that has returned home after receiving a mysterious letter from his estranged father. Upon arriving back in Boston, his father has gone missing searching Atticus’s mother family secret, so with his uncle George, the publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide, and his predictably feisty friend Letitia, he sets off on a rescue mission that involves secret societies, portals through reality and everyday bigotry.  Though what horrors can Shoggoth hold compared to the dangerous and systemic racism they encounter 1950’s America.
