Made in Italy
Made in Italy is a lovely film which is on DVD or accessible from the library’s movie site, Kanopy. The first thing that struck me about Made In Italy was the beautiful Tuscan countryside. I immediately felt I was “there” which I guess is what an escapist film is all about.
There is a lot of human drama in this movie. Liam Neeson plays Jack, a charming artist, who travels to Tuscany with his estranged son, Robert, played by Neeson’s real life son, Micheal Richardson. They are on their way to renovate Jack’s deceased wife’s Italian villa.
Jack has sold his London flat so that he can give his son a share in the villa, which he hasn’t lived in for years since his wife died, to enable Robert to buy back his Art Gallery. This film contains may heart-to heart conversations between Jack and Robert. They retrace the past and share memories of their wife, and mother. For example, Jack had sent Robert to boarding school when his wife died, something Robert resents and argues that Jack shut him out of his life. After this revelation, Jack feels brave enough to tell Robert that he is getting a divorce from his current wife.
Made In Italy has many comic moments as well. Robert meets love interest, Nathalia, at the local restaurant and invites her to dinner. It turns out that Robert’s cheat meal he serves up was cooked by Nathalia herself as she cooks for another café Robert borrows his dish from.
Made in Italy has many heart-warming scenes, both dramatic and comic, and I was hooked by the picturesque Tuscan countryside. It is a lovely feel-good movie available on DVD or Kanopy.
