The Mothers by Genevieve Gannon
The Mothers is a beautiful, emotional rollercoaster of a book, exploring the difficult road of becoming a parent through IVF.
The book focusses on two couples, Grace and Dan Arden, a couple in their forties, who have been going through IVF unsuccessfully for a long time. Never giving up, but after six rounds, struggling with the emotional turmoil of each failed pregnancy. The other couple is Priya Laghari and Nick Archer, who are being treated at the same fertility clinic, a much younger couple who are having relationship difficulties.
When Priya decides to continue with IVF without Nick, she goes in for the procedure on the same day that Grace and Dan have their last embryo transfer. Nine months later a beautiful child is born, however it is obvious that an error has occurred, and the wrong embryo was implanted. When this secret is exposed to both couples, an intense, heart wrenching custody battle follows, to decide who should raise this child. The mother who carried and birthed the child, or the mother who is the biological parent.
I found this book such an interesting read, I listened to the e-audiobook, which is available on Libby with your library membership. But you can also borrow a hard copy at the library. Once I started this book I couldn’t stop and finished it within three days, it is quite addictive. It is a book that will make you feel happy, sad, but also satisfied, as it has a lovely ending. If you are a fan of Jodi Picoult, Sally Hepworth or books that make you think, I recommend this read, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
