Mr. Inbetween
Fans of a dark comedy like 'Barry' who are after an Australian angle and a simpler, efficient story should absolutely give Mr.Inbetween a watch. The show follows Ray Shoe Smith, a hitman navigating the complexities of his violent profession alongside surprisingly mundane personal obligations. He's a devoted father, a doting brother, and capable of quick, effective violence.
The show's strength lies in the contrast of the criminal doings with Ray's everyday life. It's not a high-budget Hollywood operation but I found the raw, Australian appeal works well.
Scott Ryan's performance as Ray is a masterclass in contrasts; he's simultaneously chilling and oddly endearing as this walking bundle of contradictions.
Season 2 builds on the strong first season and once again, doesn't shy away from violence. But if you have the stomach for it, there's a unique intensity underpinned with moments of surprising emotional weight. This is a compelling exploration of a morally grey protagonist. If you're looking for a crime drama that feels real and leaves a lasting impact, look no further.
