The Power by Naomi Alderman
I got blown away by the world created in answer to Naomi’s hypothetical plot of ‘if women had power over men- what would the world look like?'
Within the space of a couple of months, young girls developed the ability to exercise a power over men. This ability spread through to all the women of the world. Women in different countries reacted in different ways, but there was a huge redress in the balance of power / money / sex /politics- all changed profoundly.
I was mesmerized by this book, in the explosive change of dynamics that happened in society all round the world.
Can the world be better, or will power corrupt? Her characters reflected different aspects of strength/manipulation/ power hunger/ gentleness /coercive/exploitation in a world that was fast changing, so who knew what trait might end up reigning supreme?
This is available from Greater Dandenong Libraries as an audiobook, this novel is a must-read for feminists, fans of dystopian worlds and sci-fi enthusiasts, and individuals like myself who struggle to envision a world different from our own. Alderman crafted a story that is both surprising and revelatory.
I loved this book, the way the author developed characters, who were imperfect, and a product of their response to the world, as it was when they did not have the power- created a really interesting, surprising journey with this plot.
