The Sandman: Overture

The Sandman: Overture by Neil Gaiman

The Sandman: Overture by Neil Gaiman assumes that you have some knowledge of the Sandman universe as it does not explain the relationship between the different entities or what they are. This is an issue as there are very few human characters and they are very powerful and serve different functions of reality. Consequently, anyone who comes to this book without this knowledge will get easily confused and will find the ending a bit out of the blue as they use a solution that is mentioned in another one of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman graphic novels.

The artwork is very beautiful, and I would recommend it to anyone that has an interest in different art styles and the way the different characters are depicted. Visually the actual plot of the story is that a star has gone mad and it's going to prematurely end all of creation and Dream sets out to stop the star because he does not like being the one that is responsible for the whole mess in the first place.

The story itself adds more detail to the mythos of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman universe as well as giving some explanation for things that happened in the original Sandman series. I enjoyed the graphic novel and would recommend it for adults and individuals that have some grounding in the series.

I do want to warn any would-be readers that the graphic novel does have some depictions of war and some people killing themselves as the planet they are on is about to get eradicated of all life. There is another character that likes to kill people and eat their eyeballs with the mouths it has instead of eyes. If you’re fine with these things I recommend it as a good addition to the Sandman universe.
