The Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has always been on my list of books to read, however unfortunately I just never got around to it. When I heard that a new collection of the works came out as audiobooks, and were read by none other than Stephen Fry, I knew I just HAD to listen to them. And I’m very glad I did. I’ve enjoyed listening to the stories immensely, and that’s in part to Fry’s phenomenal performance.
Each collection (nine in all), has a foreword by Fry and with each part, we learn some new detail about Doyle and about the period in which the stories are set. This has also been a great addition to stories as some of my perceptions have been shattered.
While the stories and the cases may not all be hugely unique, the way in which they are solved certainly are. Sherlock Holmes has long been renowned as one of the keenest literary detective minds of all time and surely enough, the processes and the way in which he solves them are astounding. Even if they do seem quite obvious once explained. Another thing I love about the stories is that they’re written from his friend and companion, Dr Watson’s, point of view. This takes most of the ego out of the equation of the brilliant detective’s work, which adds to the storytelling.
I very much enjoyed The Sherlock Holmes series and I would definitely recommend them to anyone who has even the slightest interest in crime novels. The stories being read by Stephen Fry made it all the more brilliant.
