Everyone’s horoscope at the moment should recommend catching up on a good book. This pick is utterly perfect for that purpose. I read this in January and oh wasn’t the world a different place back then? I’m bringing it back to review for you all because of its gentle loveliness.
Star-Crossed by Minnie Darke, was a hotly anticipated read last year, heavily promoted by Readings Bookstore, and including previews which caught my eye on social media advertisements. Star-Crossed is primarily the story of two childhood sweethearts, Nick and Justine, and the written-in-the-stars, will-they-won’t-they, bumbling and frustrating and inevitably endearing path of their relationship. As Justine decides to interfere with fate, the flow-on effects to strangers and friends chart a witty and fascinating journey, inter-weaving lives in unexpected yet charming ways.
My heart was thoroughly caught up in this one. I don’t consider myself to be an avid reader of romance (as a genre), and this one made me reconsider that position. The book is set in an unspecified city in Australia, so the setting feels familiar despite remaining unknown, and I found the characters full and vivid, flawed yet loveable. Perfect for fans of the 2003 movie Love Actually, or quirky romantic comedies of any sort.
