Very loosely inspired by the Amanda Knox case of an American student convicted of murder while studying abroad, writer and director Tom McCarthy's Stillwater follows it's own path for the majority of his screenplay allowing the actor's craft to rise to the occasion of the scene and the story with total buy-in. His efficiency is amazing.
Stillwater was an absolutely a fascinating journey and stars Matt Damon. It follows a father who moves from Oklahoma to Marseille, to help get his daughter out of prison for a murder she claims she didn't commit. Matt Damon gives an amazing performance in this film, one of the best performances I have seen him give.
Stillwater is a difficult film to watch - a film that resonates with the theme "Life is brutal". Not all stories have a happy ending, but when it comes to Stillwater, it all depends on which character you ask.
This story presents a lot of lessons to be learnt and can bring out the humanity in you. I highly recommend it.
