Superannuation Made Simple

Superannuation Made Simple by Noel Whittaker

I’ve read a lot of Made Simple books that totally confused me, but this book is really easy to follow, and the author has kept the chapters short and concise.

Noel Whittaker is a finance and investment expert who writes for major Australian newspapers and is considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on personal finance. The book gives a brief history of superannuation in Australia to explain why we have the system we have, and what impact this system may have in the future.

In simple terms, Mr. Whittaker lays out the tax advantages of super and how to manage these advantages for the best long term financial advantage. He explores the advantages of linking your super to your partner in some circumstances and explains side items such as salary sacrifice.

Interestingly, the author also exposes the pitfalls in the system such as who may inherit your super, inheritance laws and choosing what level of risk you’re prepared to chance within your superannuation profile.

While superannuation is forced saving for retirement, it can nevertheless be managed well or ineptly. This may mean the difference between a comfortable retirement and struggling in later life. I had very little understanding of the superannuation industry in Australia before I read this book, but Noel Whittaker’s compact chapters get straight to the point with clear, easy to read content.
