They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

They Both Die at the End is the simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming tale of Mateo and Rufus on their last day to live.

The story tells of two young men who, when they find themselves alone on their death day, use the Last Friends app to meet. As the two get to know each other and form a deep bond you, as the reader, are rooting for them despite being told over and over again that they are going to die today. They spend their day trying to figure out how to live their lives to the fullest, supporting each other through difficult situations and encouraging each other to let go and just have fun. There are seconds where they are just two teenagers falling in love before the book brings you back to reality, they really will die today.

A cast of secondary characters reminds us just how much our lives intersect with those around us and show all sorts of consequences from those connections. Even in these characters, some of whom are dying, some not, author Adam Silvera writes about how varied and important friendship and relationships are. Even if we don’t realise it until the day we die.
