If you are a fan of Robert Galbraith’s Cormoran Strike series, this book is a real gem. Troubled Blood is the fifth title in the series, written by J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. In her intelligent, subtle way, J.K. Rowling - writing as Galbraith - develops a beautiful plot, featuring a Private Detective Cormoran Strike and his business partner Robin Ellacott.
This time they are investigating a cold case – a mysterious disappearance of a London GP that vanished without a trace in the 1970s. A young feminist doctor left her surgery to meet a friend in a pub, never to be seen again. Was she a victim of the serial killer Dennis Creed who was living in the area at the time, or someone even more sinister? It is rich, insightful fiction, that brings to life colourful characters and the flavour of the era, keeping the reader completely absorbed by the events that evolve. But the most beautiful parts of the book are the masterfully painted characters of Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott – each of them facing their own demons from the past. Fearless and uncompromising when investigating crime, they are unlikely kindred spirits, so different but still drawn to each other. They are modern people, far from perfect - scarred by past events and their complicated personal life experience. At the same time, they are warm, lovable and honest, able to see things for what they are, and never afraid to do what is right.
This book is an absolute pleasure to read. At 900 pages plus, Troubled Blood may seem like a challenge to some, but Galbraith’s rich and sophisticated style is anything but. This engaging, well-constructed and masterfully told fiction will keep you hungry for more.
