The Vagus Nerve Reset by Anna Ferguson
Stress and family, professional and social pressures can contribute to feelings of depression, anxiety and overwhelm. It is therefore important that we maintain a good balance of work, leisure and rest. However, more recently mental health professionals have utilised physiological or somatic bodywork to overcome these feelings, which often manifest as physical symptoms.
The Vagus Nerve runs from the brain to the large intestine, which explains why we sometimes get an upset stomach and nervous system issues due to stress and anxiety. Ferguson’s plan includes some physical exercises that help with resetting the Vagus nerve, providing better somatic coping skills for stress and anxiety.
I found some of the physical exercises redundant; however, it would have been helpful to have visual representations of these by way of drawings.
Overall, the book was interesting and helpful and certainly very topical with regard to somatic healing for trauma, etc.
