Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person DVD

“Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person” is a French-language film with English subtitles and was released in 2023. Before I start this review, I want to warn people that the film touches on the following themes: suicide, depression, bullying, and self-destructive behaviour. It also touches on the consequences of eating disorders. If these themes are triggering for you, I would recommend avoiding this film.

The title of this film is slightly misleading as it conjures the idea of a film that is either very philosophical, comedic, or a combination of both. The actual plot of this film is a coming-of-age story with some dark comedy elements.

The plot follows the character Sasha, who is a vampire. She is unable to kill people and relies on her parents to supply her with blood. Her mother gets frustrated with Sasha. Once Sasha’s fangs appear and she develops the ability to kill people, Sasha becomes reluctant to do so. Her mother and father decide to send her to live with her cousin Denise in the hope that Denise will be able to overcome Sasha’s reluctance to kill people, with the ultimate goal that Sasha will be able to look after herself and not rely on her family for her survival. Denise does this by taking her hunting with her and refusing to give her blood to try to force her to hunt.

While this is happening, Sasha meets Paul, who informs her that he is willing to sacrifice his life so she can continue to live. From this point onwards, the main plot of the film commences.

There are several things I enjoyed about this film. The film can be very funny, especially the interaction between the characters Denise and JP. It is also a decent coming-of-age story, but unfortunately for me, I was not expecting that when I started watching the film.

I do have several issues with the film, the first being that some of the characters are very flat and lack development beyond a standard formulaic caricature you get in many coming-of-age stories. The second issue I had with the film is that the title and the description I read online are a bit misleading. I originally thought I was going to be watching either a dark comedy or a film dealing with the moral and philosophical implications of being forced to eat people to survive. The film does not on any meaningful level deal or interact with these questions.

The other big problem the film has is that it only does a very superficial exploration of depression, suicidal urges and self-destructive behaviour, while having characters dealing with all these issues. This is disappointing as the film does have an opportunity to explore these issues in depth but doesn’t.

I feel like this film is aimed at mid to late teenagers who are beginning to explore films that don’t follow the traditional Hollywood plot.
