Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer
I borrowed Assistant to the Villain audiobook on a whim as the title captured my attention. I have to say I was not disappointed.
The story follows Evie Sage, who after quitting her previous job abruptly, was desperate to find another as the sole provider for her family. She stumbles upon The Villain who offers her a job, and she takes it.
It turns out The Villain runs quite the office. With the aim of causing havoc and enacting revenge on the king, The Villain runs a whole office of employees, from guards, HR, a healer and a cook to a myriad of other office staff.
Evie is trying to find her feet and achieve all the tasks needed to help The Villain with his cause while trying not to drool over him.
I loved this book. It is filled with lots of quirky characters, a not-so-villainous villain, magic, humour, a little bit of romance, plenty of family drama and of course, not to forget, a literate frog. I very quickly followed this one with the next instalment, Apprentice to the Villain, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next one, Accomplice to the Villain, due to come out later this year.
If you love quirky characters, a bit of fantasy, and the show The Office this one is definitely for you.
