Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins
As a big Hunger Games fan, I was incredibly excited to read this book. Sunrise on the Reaping is a prequel to The Hunger Games series, set during the Fiftieth Hunger Games - a Quarter Quell - and tells the story of Haymitch and how he conquered the arena.
The Hunger Games is a dystopian adventure trilogy in which the world is divided into districts, with the powerful Capitol ruled cruelly by President Snow. While the original series follows Katniss’s journey, Sunrise on the Reaping explores Haymitch’s story (a key character in the original series) and how his life was forever changed when he was chosen to fight to the death.
I devoured this book in just three days - it’s amazing. I highly recommend reading The Hunger Games series first, as it adds depth and meaning to this prequel. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s a truly satisfying read, and I think fans of the series will absolutely love it.
The writing style is also quite interesting. Near the end of the novel, the author incorporates elements of Edgar Allan Poe and poetry, which beautifully enhances the mood of the story.
Trigger warning: The Hunger Games series contains graphic violence, so please be aware of this before reading.
You can borrow this book as a hard copy from the library or access it as an eAudiobook or eBook on Libby. Enjoy. I wish I could go back and read it for the first time again - it was just that good.
