Three Wild Dogs and the Truth by Markus Zusak
Markus Zusak became a literary sensation with the publication of his highly successful novel, The Book Thief, over 20 years ago. The Australian author is not only a talented storyteller but also a genuinely kind person. This quality shines through in his latest book, Three Wild Dogs, a memoir in which he shares the stories of his three big, quirky rescue dogs: Reuben, Archer and Frosty.
Life with rescue dogs is never dull, and there were moments when Zusak questioned his decision to bring these three wild and spirited creatures into his home. Despite the challenges, he and his family have remained devoted to Reuben, Archer, and Frosty. In return, each dog, with its unique temperament, brings immense love and comfort to the family, becoming an indispensable part of it.
Three Wild Dogs is more than just a memoir about life with pets; it delves into themes of family, resilience, grief, and gratitude. It explores the messiness of life and how that chaos creates our most treasured memories. As Zusak states, “They (Zusak’s dogs) change our lives for the messier, but the mess is outrageously memorable.”
I love how Zusak writes with affection, wit, and authenticity about the chaos and joy Reuben, Archer, and Frosty have brought into his family’s life. His deep love for his dogs is profoundly moving, and I believe he wouldn’t be the person he is today without their companionship and the unconditional love they have offered to him, his wife and his children.
I listened to the eAudiobook read by Zusak himself. Hearing the author share his life adds an extra layer of intimacy and authenticity to the story.
