Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu
Interior Chinatown is clever, funny, and quietly heartbreaking all at once. Written like a screenplay, it tells the story of Willis Wu, a man stuck playing background characters in a fictional police procedural and in life.
Through sharp satire and surreal humour, Charles Yu explores identity, racism, and the roles Asian Americans are expected to play, both on screen and in society. It’s a truly unique read that’s both thought-provoking and surprisingly emotional. Short, sharp, and totally original, I can’t say I have read anything like it.
I also highly recommend watching the TV series, which is streaming on Disney and stars Jimmy O. Yang and Ronny Chieng. It’s funnier than the book, and I would say I enjoyed it even more, fingers crossed for a season 2.
