Normal People

Normal People by Sally Rooney

Normal People by Sally Rooney remains my favourite of her novels because of her stunning ability to conjure the extreme vulnerability and beauty of first love.

Marianne and Connell, her protagonists, are cleverly and clearly drawn and are very believable. The fragility and strength of their connection through the difficulties of growing up are well observed and highly relatable.

The idea of ‘normal people’ and what that constitutes is a brilliant and universal central concept, a fantastic hook that allows every reader to question what they consider ‘normal’ and how that definition may differ depending on their circumstances and family of origin.

Normal People also reminds us of the importance of clear communication in relationships (something many come to with maturity) and how filling in the gaps yourself can lead to loss.

Normal People is a great book, worth reading or rereading at any age.
