Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman
Dungeon Crawler Carl was recommended to me, and the title intrigued me. It is a combination of science fiction, fantasy and adventure, with something like online role‑playing games where you can level up, increase your stats and earn loot.
Think the pace of a Matthew Reilly book and the fun of a Douglas Adams book, and you will get the idea. Some of the reviews I read likened it to Dungeons and Dragons in book form (confession: I have never played Dungeons and Dragons).
Imagine you wake up one night and your ex‑girlfriend’s cat, who you still have custody of, has escaped through an open window. When Carl goes outside to tempt Princess Donut (the cat) back inside, dressed only in his boxers and his ex‑girlfriend’s too‑small pink Crocs, an alien invasion destroys all man‑made structures on Earth.
Those who survive this invasion are given the option to participate in an intergalactic reality show where you need to level up to be competitive as you go further down in the dungeon or die trying. Carl and Princess Donut enter the dungeon and begin their adventure.
There are eight books in the series.
