All Systems Red by Martha Wells (The Murderbot Diaries #1)
Step into the world of “Murderbot,” a fast-paced science fiction adventure. The cyborg construct, Murderbot, is fed up—annoyed with humans, irritated at the company that owns it, and wishing it could be left alone to watch TV for a while. Unfortunately, it is a “security unit” tasked with protecting human clients from life-threatening situations—and these catastrophes just keep coming!
When the chance arises to break free, what will Murderbot choose to do? After all, it says it doesn’t care, but in reality, it cares a lot—especially about keeping people safe.
I've always enjoyed reading science fiction, and All Systems Red is a fantastic example of the genre. It gets the reader to contemplate a new world, imagine future technologies and their implications, and, most of all, introduces a compelling story with heartwarming characters and lots of fun.
To top it all off, All Systems Red has won some serious awards, including the Nebula and Hugo Awards, which recognise excellence within the science fiction genre.
This novella is easy to read and great for practising English, as it is short (150 pages) and the language is not too complicated. It’s also excellent if you’d like to try out a sci-fi book without committing to a long novel.
Enjoy this short science fiction novella with a pessimistic cyborg protagonist, fast-paced combat, and lots of heart. It’s a great story about friendship, self-determination, and humanity.
All Systems Red is being adapted into a TV series; filming has recently started. I’m looking forward to watching it when it is eventually released.
Greater Dandenong Libraries has the full series available. If you have read and enjoyed this story, find the others in the series on our catalogue.
