The Banshees of Inisherin (DVD)
The Banshees of Inisherin is a very dark drama set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. Set against the context of the Troubles, the drama centres on two local inhabitants, Colm and Pádraic, who are firm best friends and drinking buddies. Colm, played by Brendan Gleeson and Pádraic, played by Colin Farrell (the actors reunited after their terrific performances in the mighty In Bruges), are at the heart of the story. Colm suddenly decides that he no longer wishes to be friends with Pádraic, who reacts, as one would expect, with sadness.
Pádraic, whilst not the brightest button in the box and whose conversation appears to be quite limited, refuses to let the friendship go and continues to try to befriend Colm, with increasingly disastrous results. The film is described as comic, and some parts are darkly so. However, it was a tough, if unique, watch one not to be forgotten easily.
