Beaumaris modern 2: modernist homes in Beaumaris

Beaumaris modern 2 by Fiona Austin

This beautifully presented coffee table book takes the reader back to the 1950s and 60s, when mid-century modern architecture and design was all the rage. In Beaumaris, a coastal suburb of Melbourne, many talented architects began to leave their mark on the landscape. They focused on simple, clean lined and elegant designs, featuring open plan living with seamless connection to the outdoors. Within a relatively short period, Beaumaris became renowned for it’s modernist homes.

The story does not end there however. The author's objectives in writing the book are not only to celebrate Australian modernism but also to educate the reader on the importance of architectural preservation.
While these unique homes continue to be demolished in the name of progress, an important part of Australia’s architectural legacy will remain under threat.

Who will love this book? Local history buffs will enjoy reading about the history of Beaumaris, while those interested in Australian architecture and design will spend hours perusing through the stunning photographs of beautiful and timeless houses.
