The Bullet that Missed by Richard Osman
The Bullet That Missed is a third installation of a four-part series Thursday Murder Club, by Richard Osman. The series was recommended to me and I’m so glad it was.
This particular story follows four octogenarians, Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim as they solve some recent and some not recent murder cases. They are trying to figure out who killed a local news reporter a decade ago while trying to navigate an assassination request of a former KGB chief.
The four characters are full of just that, character. Every one of them is different, and a delight in their own right. There are two parallel cases going on, and a whole lot of personal drama too. They’re not all the best of people, but you it’s hard not to love the relationship and comradery that they have built between each other.
My only slightly disappointment had nothing to do with the book itself but the change of narrator of the audio books. First two books are read by Leslie Manville, this one, and the next one, are read by Fiona Shaw. And while Fiona Shaw does a good job, for me Leslie Manville very much suited the characters better.
I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. The storylines are great, the characters wonderful and it comes with an added bonus of a moral that senior citizens are still useful members of the community and not just invisible people to be discounted.
The first two books, Thursday Murder Club and The Man Who Died Twice, are also very much worth the read. I can’t wait for the last book, The Last Devil to Die, to become available.
