The Comfort Book by Matt Haig

The Comfort Book is, as author Matt Haig calls it, a collection of “ little islands of hope” - stories, anecdotes, sayings and self reflections to comfort you when things are tough.

Sometimes they are a few pages long, or just a few words on each page.  Matt has been very open about his own struggles with depression and hoplessness and his book The Midnight Library is a story based around a woman who has reached a very low point in her life. Matt hopes this book will help others navigate life, the universe and the “messy miracle” of being alive.

In the book Matt shares his favourite playlists, movies, quotes and stories of the Roman leader Marcus Aurelius (amongst others), and even a recipe for hummus.

One of my favourite pieces is called 'Toast' -

“Continually looking for the meaning of life is like looking for the meaning of toast.  It is sometimes better just to eat the toast”.

I found The Comfort Book delightful and poignant. I enjoyed the quiet wisdom, the humour and Matt's candid reflections on his own experiences.
It is the kind of book you can dip into for daily inspiration, or settle in and read at length. Either way you will find joy, hope and connection within the pages.
I could go on listing all my favourite parts from this book but I'll finish with one last quote -

“We exist on a spinning coin. We cannot predict how it will land but we can enjoy the shine as it spins".

A beautiful book for our times. Snuggle up and enjoy.
