Design & Building on Country

Design & Building on Country by Alison Page

Did you know that Aboriginal people are Australia’s first scientists and inventors? This book is a wonderful way to learn about Aboriginal technology and innovation. Imagine being able to find everything you need from the bush, chemists, supermarkets and hardware stores.

I learned that the woomera (spearthrower) is the original Swiss Army knife. It could be used to make a spear fly faster and more accurately, to start a fire, to carry seeds and small items and even to cut using the stone blade often attached.

I also learnt that the knowledge of who, when, and how to make and use the gifts of the land can be found in the Songlines of your home, a way of learning passed down through songs, artwork, dances, and stories.

Design & Building on Country is shortlisted for the CBCA Book Awards. Grown-ups: This book has been adapted from the First Knowledges series of books for adults.
