The Edible Backyard: A Practical Guide to Growing Organic Fruit and Vegetables All Year Round by Kate Irvine

Irvines’ top tip in building your vegie patch from The Edible Backyard is to understand climate and soil. The best results come from “knowing where the wind blows, the frost sits and the water flows” and ideally follows a permaculture set up. From here you can start the design process and this book lays clear foundations for the set up.

I love some of the inspiration in here; a rotary washing line becomes a grape arbour, and using toilet rolls as biodegradable seed raising containers. The idea of creating shelter so the wind doesn’t damage plants is often overlooked and provides ingenious ways to filter wind.

Each month is covered: what to sow (direct or tray), transplant, harvest, jobs to do, the greenhouse, herbs and fruit trees. The Edible Backyard is a neat, informative guide to get your garden off the ground and running as a vegie plot to feed yourself.

Why not join up with our Seed Library  as well and get your garden growing?
