Familiar Face by Michael DeForge is a short graphic novel with a lot of impact. It is set in a utopian world where everything gets updated without warning to streamline and improve society. These updates can be to the train lines, road maps, buildings, or to the characters themselves.
The main character works in the complaints department, and her girlfriend works for the maps, but they are not allowed to talk about their work. After waking up one morning, the main character finds that her girlfriend is gone. Was this because of an update? Or had she truly left with no warning?
She searches everywhere she can think of for her girlfriend, following any clues she can find, even a complaint she was assigned at work, written about her by her girlfriend. Will she find out what happened to her girlfriend? Will they reconnect again?
If you enjoy sci-fi and utopian novels, this book is must-read. It makes you think about the impact of technology on society and what is more important in life, connection, or progression.
