Greenwood by Michael Christie

Greenwood is an island holding the last of the old growth forests on Earth and it is dying. Greenwood is also the name of a well-known pioneer of the timber industry. However, this ancestral trail has been lost over the years. So how is our protagonist Jake, connected to the name Greenwood and this valuable island?

The story starts in 2038, with Jake as tour guide for Greenwood Arboreal Cathedral where the wealthy seek the refuge of the trees and to remember them. A chance to meeting with an ex on a tour reveals he has other motives, mainly to inform her of her possible link to the island. And so, starts an epic tale going back to 1908 where Greenwood begins, with two brothers, who are devoted to trees but take different paths.

This is a very engaging read. The author takes you back through the years to peel back the layers of four generations of this complex family. Be prepared to trip back and forth and hop from one character to another as it skips along taking you on a journey through time.

Greenwood is a work of speculative fiction, with a nod to climate fiction, and a gripping mystery. I was easily carried along with this beautifully crafted piece of storytelling.
