Hemlock Island

Hemlock Island by Kelley Armstrong

Hemlock Island is a twisty, edge‑of‑your‑seat horror novel that will keep you guessing right until the final page.

The story follows Laney Kilpatrick, a writer and schoolteacher who is renting out her beloved, stunning and very isolated home on Hemlock Island. Suddenly, there are reports from renters about strange occurrences on the island, descriptions that suggest occult or witchcraft signs and rituals. Laney packs her bag to investigate, bringing along her niece, the daughter of her recently deceased sister. When she arrives on the island, she is met by her ex‑husband and three estranged friends from her past, one of whom she shares a dark history with. Soon they discover they are trapped on the island, and people begin to go missing. Violent acts unfold, and strange things can be seen and heard. They need to escape the island, but will they survive until morning?

At first, this book feels familiar, a haunted protagonist with personal challenges, characters who may be friends or foes and a mysterious setting where strange things are constantly unfolding. We think we are navigating a locked‑room mystery. But as it progresses, more surprising supernatural and strange occurrences begin to happen, leaving the reader unable to predict what is in store for Laney and her group. Armstrong uses a fast‑paced narrative style, with gripping themes of complicated family relationships, horror, the supernatural, accepting your past and future and jaw‑dropping revelations. This horror story will stay with you long after the last word, asking you to think about who or what owns the land we buy and live on and how they always get what they want in the end.

I would highly recommend this book to any reader who enjoys twisty thriller‑horror novels, and I will definitely be seeking out more Kelley Armstrong publications in the future.
