How to Repaint a Life by Steven Herrick

How to Repaint a Life is an edgy book that acknowledges the issues of homelessness and finding your own way in life.

Isaac’s family life has been troubled for a long time. His mum left when he was 12 and his dad is violent and abusive. Turning 17, Isaac determines to leave this troubled start to his life far behind him. He catches a bus and arrives in a small Victorian town. He meets Joan, a cafe owner, and convinces her to teach him to make coffee so that he can assist her in the cafe. Sophie is a VCE student in the town that Isaac arrives in. She is a great artist but troubled by social complications at school. Sophie meets Isaac at the café and deep friendship develops.

Stephen Herricks is a master at creating multifaceted, nuanced characters and weaving them together into a compelling story of hope amidst the broken reality of life.
