A Kind of Magic

A Kind of Magic by Anna Spargo-Ryan

Anna Spargo-Ryan’s A Kind of Magic is a very courageous book. The vulnerability and honesty that Spargo-Ryan evokes in her memoir is nothing short of extraordinary. It wouldn’t be easy to write so openly about having debilitating mental illnesses- including anxiety, depression and OCD.

The author’s accounts of her adversity dealing with parenting, working and her family all the while juggling mental health issues is at times, a bit stressful. It was fascinating learning about the mental health system and the still existing social stigma.
This is the author’s first non- fiction book, and her third in what will probably be a long line of books.

Her book gently cautions the reader at the beginning- almost like a touch to the uncertain shoulder- “Are you sure?”. The book does have some dark events and feelings that Anna Spargo-Ryan experiences, but I am glad that I went on this journey with her.
I really wish that there more other brave people who would write like she does, about their mental health struggles.

Maybe that way, the social stigma will continue to diminish?
