The Lunchbox
The Lunchbox is an Indian feature film written and directed by Ritesh Batra.
Mumbai is one of the largest cities by population in the world, known for its popular lunch delivery service where thousands of lunchboxes are promptly delivered to people at their workplaces. Humans being humans, mistakes can happen, and this is the story of one such rare mistake.
Two lonely people among more than twenty million Mumbaikars overcome their loneliness. Saajan, a widower, is almost ready for a well-deserved retirement. A young and beautiful woman, Ila, suddenly enters Saajan’s life, challenging his belief that everything is behind him and that a second chance is simply not possible.
Ila, a neglected wife, tries to impress her husband with delicious lunches, but they end up on Saajan’s desk instead of her husband's. The wrong and mistaken delivery soon becomes a very welcome one, where initially two strangers, through the daily lunchboxes, start eagerly exchanging notes about their lives - unhappiness, disappointments, fears, small joys, and memories - just like good, old friends.
I recommend this 109-minute movie for its heartwarming and universal story, beautifully told by Ritesh with a talented cast. As a fan of world cinema, I appreciate how the film reminds us of our fundamental needs for support, kindness, friendship, love, and happiness - from the very beginning to the very end of our lives.
