Margo’s Got Money Troubles

Margo’s Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe

This book follows our protagonist, Margo, as she discovers she is pregnant with her married English professor's baby. Oh and she’s only 19. Her father is a professional wrestler with a new family, her mum is lovable but aloof and is planning on marrying a strictly religious man and neither can provide her with a solid support system. Regardless, with all the mounting reasons why Margo shouldn’t become a mother, she chooses to keep the baby, feeling this could be the role she was supposed to take in her life.

What transpires is a heartwarming tale of love, family and a raw and honest snapshot of the difficulties of being a young, single mum. Margo and Bodhi (the beloved baby) are living in a share house, desperately trying to make ends meet when Margo discovers OnlyFans and the financial stability (and flexibility) it could give a young mum who is yearning for both.

This book also explores a lovely reconnection between Margo and her estranged father and the everlasting and powerful love they both have for this beautiful little baby.

This book examines tough subjects about motherhood, people’s judgements of sex work, the desire to provide stability for those you love and building a life that you can be proud of. At the end of the day, a mother’s love is stronger than anything, and you know that Margo would do whatever is necessary to help her baby be happy and healthy.

However, doing the type of work that is frowned upon by society comes with a cost, especially to Margo’s new and established relationships. I feel this book offers an interesting perspective on this discussion and while not perfect, I think it plays a part in normalising and legitimising sex work as real work.
