Ningaloo: Australia's Wild Wonder by Tim Winton
Ningaloo: Australia’s Wild Wonder is a beautiful children’s science picture book, illustrated by Cindy Lane and written by renowned Australian author Tim Winton. It is a wonderful introduction to one of Australia’s most unique World Heritage sites, Ningaloo Reef, on the coast of Western Australia.
The book’s format is simple but effective. Each two-page spread focuses on one environment, region, or species from the greater Ningaloo ecosystem. The full picture of this beautiful and diverse area unfolds with each turn of the page, while the vibrant illustrations capture the magic of Ningaloo’s animals and landscapes. The book as a whole act as an ambassador, raising awareness of and interest in this decidedly remote wonderland.
Ningaloo ends with a plea from the author for further measures to protect the reef from human impacts, although much of the region already enjoys some protection. We can only hope that new generations continue to be inspired by this unique wild place and join the fight to preserve it completely.
