The Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner by Grace Tame
Grace Tame, former Australian of the Year is a champion of feminist and disability societal advocacy.
Her memoir Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner is a really interesting read. Tame not only talks about her background, growing up in Tasmania and her family life, she also candidly mentions the horrific grooming and abuse she endured by a former teacher.
Grace Tame is very honest, sometimes brutally but her overall message is not of victimhood but of being a strong, intelligent young woman.
The book itself is a page-turner but also not for the faint hearted in terms of some of the triggering topics Tame touches upon in her writing.
She also talks about some of the issues that came from being Australian of the Year, including her infamous glare at former Prime Minister Scott Morrison as well as her National Press Club addresses.
“I survived being Australian of the Year because I knew already that it wouldn't be a true reflection of my worth. I knew it would be ugly, at least in part. I came equipped with a glimpse of fame that made me realise two profound things. One is that people's ideas of it will always be warped from the outside and there's little that can be done to control that. The other being that you don't have to let it warp you if you hold on to what is most dear.”
Grace Tame’s memoir is available as an eAudiobook, eBook and also on our shelves in the Biography section.
