Peta Lyre is under pressure. Who wouldn’t be when they’re having to keep constant tabs on their ‘normal’ rating, with every social interaction judged on a scale of 1 to 10. With an alphabet of diagnoses (Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, SPD) Peta just wants to fit in with her friends, to pass as ‘normal,’ to follow the rules.
This young adult book is a moving story of Peta’s explorations of friendship and dating. Her experiences lead her to question the assumptions made by trusted adults, which are the very foundation of the social rules she tries so hard to live by.
I highly recommend this unconventional and endearing coming of age story.
Peta Lyre’s Rating Normal was on the shortlist for the CBCA’s 2021 Book of the Year: Older Readers. For more great books check out the Children's Book Council of Australia website.
